Have you recently started a new job? Are you having trouble with other team members? Then you probably need a few helping tactics on office politics to get through.

Office politics is not a taboo word nor is it optional as some people may think. It is a pervasive thing at the workplace, in other words you need to arm yourself with simple tactics to help you manage and control your reactions when entering political waters.

First let’s understand what office politics is:

Office politics is simply about the differences between people at work; differences in opinions, differences in backgrounds, differences in mentalities and conflicts of interests which are often manifested as office politics. It all boils down to human communications and relationships.

6 Tips on Mastering Office Politics

Fancy modern offices and highly qualified and sophisticated staff often mislead us to think that humans’ reactions have developed since prehistoric ages where the human reaction in wildlife was either fight or flight.

Business environment is a modern jungle where the basic human “employee/employer” reaction is still fight or flight; however it takes tactics to control your reaction in these situations.

Here are some tactics to practice and master:

  1. Don’t complain: If you find yourself in a bad situation instead of feeling victimized or angry focus on what you could do to influence the situation.

  1. Seek to understand first: surprisingly seeking to understand is a very disarming technique. When the other party feels that you fully understand him he is more likely to feel less defensive and open up to what you are saying.

  1. Play nice and fight fair: during tricky times always maintain respect, politeness and kindness. Address behaviors not individuals and handle confrontations privately.

  1. Think Win-Win: Try to reach a solution where both sides win. This requires that you first understand what is in it for the other person then what is in it for you. Then strive to seek out a resolution that is acceptable and beneficial to both parties.

  1. Always keep your cool: nothing that happens in the office is worth a heart attack; by staying the calmer party you have a better chance to think and act.

  1. Don’t pass on gossip: Gossip always comes back and hits you in the face.

Finally keep in mind what you are trying to achieve, in other words the outcome of your 40 hours a week of work. In today’s business organizations the most important thing is outcome. Therefore, keep it in mind that you are on your way from point A to point B and office politics is just a tool to get through the day.
